Excavating for the Foundation

Transformation of the backyard continued with excavation for the observatory foundation and the electrical conduit. A light-colored silt loam horizon underlies a thick layer of dark topsoil. These soils have a high seasonal water table partially drained by perforated pipe set in a pre-existing stone trench (not seen in the photo). The foundation trench was excavated well below the frost line to a depth of 4 feet. Craig Prince, seen in the excavator, did an excellent job of preserving the intact island of soil in which the concrete base for the telescope would be poured.
